Since September 2012 I have been creating and regularly updating my own website, documenting my new skills and evidence gathered on my Primary PGCE journey.
I have found the process a good but challenging one, often finding aspects of the showcase challenging, but overcoming these challenges and effectively putting myself in the same shoes that children would be in.
Advantages of web page design.
First impressions do count. Parents first protocol when deciding which primary school to send their child will be to look at the website and see what the school offers. It is therefore important for a school to have a website that is user friendly to all and is accessible, being updated on a regular basis. I feel I could now design a school website based on my experiences of designing my own website, and would feel confident in doing so.
A school's website can be used by teachers to upload homework and safe links for the children to access at home. It can also be used for children to talk to each other safely on the internet, through blogging and discussion forums. Parents can access newsletters and view galleries of events that a school might have held.
Disadvantages of web page design.
Creating a website can be quite time consuming, and must be regularly updated. Although this is a problem, with dedication from staff members the time could be split effectively and training could be given in how to work efficiently in updating the websites content.
Another factor is cost, as school's may have to pay for a web designer and someone to update the site. Using free sites such as weebly or moonfruit is one way of overcoming this and having an effective ICT coordinator who is confident in their use of ICT and web page design.
