Materials.
After the materials session at University I thought it would be a good idea to consolidate my knowledge of rocks by making chocolate ones! I thought this would be really good as a demonstration lesson for students as its fun and creative. With a smaller group I would want them to participate but this would be too difficult with a class of 30 all at once!
Sedimentary rock
Formed by sediment that is deposited over time, usually as layers at the bottom of lakes and oceans. The sediment is compressed over time as can be seen in the picture. |
Metamorphic rock
Have been changed over time by extreme pressure and heat. |
Igneous rock
Formed when magma cools and solidifies. As you can see from the picture I don't think this is exactly correct! But in teaching I have learnt it is good to fail, that is when the learning process begins. |
Evaluation:
On GPP, I decided to make chocolate rocks with my class. This worked extremely well, as the class were excited to find out about the different types of rocks. Although they didn't understand all the terminology, they could identify the three main types of rocks and definitely enjoyed eating the final product!
