Teaching Experience
Final Professional Placement - Newhey County Primary School
April 2013 - June 2013
Foundation stage placement - Newhey County Primary School
February 2013
Maths pathway placement - Kentmere Primary School
January 2013 - February 2013
I have just undertaken a Maths specialist pathway in a school in Rochdale to develop my Mathematical skills and work closely with a Year 3 and Year 6 class. This gave me the opportunity to devise a project that would ensure progression throughout the school. This was based on subtraction using a number line and counting on. This was developed in line with the Maths calculation policy.
Guided Professional Placement - Crossgates Primary School
October 2012-December 2012
My responsibilities here included developing medium and weekly term plans in line with curriculum objectives. I was the classroom teacher for a mixed ability class, comprising of Year 2 and 3. I established a purposeful learning environment in which diversity is valued and children felt safe and secure. Developing my own behaviour management strategies allowed me to take responsibility for my own professional development. I provided children with inspiring ways of progressing through the National Curriculum and worked alongside colleagues to plan and implement work. Using both formative and summative assessments allowed me to record this progress and plan future lessons effectively. This 7 week teaching placement also allowed me to get involved with extra-curricular activities, including the Christmas disco and preparations for the Christmas concert.
November 2009 – July 2012
Teaching Assistant – Kip McGrath Professional Tutoring (afternoon’s only – three times weekly)
Kip McGrath professional tutoring organisation specifically teaches Maths, English and more recently Science. My experience here has been invaluable. My role developed from one of organisational support to that of a teaching assistant, both planning, and delivering taught sessions to pupils aged four to eleven. Prior to acceptance of students at the centre, it was my responsibility to oversee the initial assessment of the child's capabilities in Maths and English. My role extended to an evaluation of their spelling and reading age, which determined the basis for individual lesson plans. I absolutely loved my job here and have learnt that patience is a virtue when it comes to teaching, every child learns at his/her own pace, and I feel that the children that I taught were filled with confidence and inspiration to learn.
September 2011 – January 2012 (voluntary work)
Teaching Assistant at St Joseph’s Park Hill
Here I worked with Year Two, Three and Four, encompassing both Key stage one and Key stage two. My role here was equivalent to a teaching assistant, working closely with children, hearing readers and helping with homework. It has been both interesting and informative to observe at first hand the classroom environment, and specifically the teacher continually changing her teaching methods to keep the whole class attentive. I have particularly enjoyed and been involved in practical lessons, supporting the teacher in encouraging "hands on" learning. This has reinforced my belief that aspects of the curriculum can be fun, and at the same time educational.
Listening to children read has taught me a great deal, revealing a lot of pupils lack confidence when asked to read aloud, often becoming apprehensive when saying a word incorrectly. I have been able to provide support and encouragement when self-esteem has been low, giving me a real sense of achievement.
